I love tugs and log booms - they are like active commercial fishing boats in that they are iconic images of the West Coast. And when the tug and boom are in a beautiful sunset...it just doesn't get much more photogenic than that. When I saw this tug go past my living room window, I grabbed my camera, hopped into my car and high-tailed it to our local limestone quarry. I knew that the benchlands of the mine would afford me the perfect angle from which to take this picture. I had to hurry. Even though tugs towing log booms seem to move slowly, they do move relentlessly along. After parking the car, I still had a 10-minute hike in front of me as I made my way to what I thought to be the best spot. Even then, I only had a few minutes to set up my tripod, focus my camera and squeeze off a couple of shots. I think that the effort was worth it.
