Arbutus Trees, Dick Island - Rodger Hort Photography

Rodger Hort Photography

Dick Island is a private island just off Shelter Point Park on Texada Island. The arbutus trees are an architecturally stunning tree to photograph, and they grow near salt water on the West Coast. I can't recall seeing an arbutus tree that isn't in the company of a pine or fir tree nearby. The bark of the arbutus turns a distinctive orange colour, and the bark sheds off the tree at about mid-summer. The bark underneath is an equally beautiful olive colour that gradually darkens to the orange you see in this picture. The leaves remain on the tree but are partially shed after the tree blooms in the late spring.
