We get some stunning sunrises here in Van Anda on the eastern side of Texada Island. This is one example of this. The stratus clouds can shroud Malaspina Strait overnight but begin to break up with the sunrise and produce effects like this one – we call it Jacob's Ladder lighting (this English term comes from the Anglican church and its Sunday School message that you would walk up to heaven on Jacob's Ladder). When the skies are clear at sunrise, the sun shoots down the strait like a massive searchlight, seeking out every nook and crag on the Powell River shoreline. My wife and I literally sit for hours with our cups of coffee, watching the show that occurs every morning outside our living room windows.
